Biography
Plato was the youngest son of Ariston and Perictione, both of whom came from powerful wealthy families that had lived in Athens for generations. During his lifetime Plato experienced the failings of democracy, as he watched the mighty Greek empire crumble. He also suffered to watch his mentor, Socrates, die at the hands of the ignorant. It is because of this that in "The Republic" he has such a disdain for democracy, hoping instead for a state of "Philosopher Kings".
